I bought this thing in 1988 from a university professor, who, confessed that he sadly allowed his son to misuse and ´ruin´ the truck, while he was attending college. The price was right, at $1,100. When I took the test drive the old professor set next to me and he said: " Come on son, step on it in the 2nd gear, you will feel the power, you can pull it out all the way to 90 mph. in 2nd." I did, and it did. Rocketed almost instantly to 70-80 mph on a quiet Sunday afternoon, on a little sleepy street in College Station Texas, near Texas A&M University. That sealed the sale. Of course, it isn´t just power that pours from the 360 CID (5.8liter) V8, you can put the transmission into 3rd gear, (direct drive), slip off the clutch and the truck starts rolling, it will not stall with a mild load on a level road, just labors a bit, the torque is tremendous. Now, (late 2007), I moved on to a F-350 dually with a V10 engine, another smooth performer, more power, and even more torque. Easy on the gas too, this one gets 10 miles to the gallon, or better. The old truck is only used on the property now, moving firewood and such, but it still runs strong. It only made me walk once, when the ignition coil failed, at about 280,000 miles. Of course this is no record by any means, I heard of many guys who put 1 million miles or more on a Ford or Chevy truck. Can you do that with the ´Smart Car´?

- Ignition coil failed at 280,000 miles. The 3 speed manual transmission needed rebuilding after about 300,000 miles. I have a bad habit of pulling it out to 80-90 miles an hour in 2nd gear, which is hard on the synchronizing gear. The output shaft bearing race was also split in two, this caused no real problem, but was replaced at the time of rebuild.
